Celebrating the 11th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative, the "Belt and Road: Harmony in Diversity" International Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition grandly opened. Eminent calligrapher Mr. Shang Fuping participated as a specially invited master artist, with his signature series becoming the exhibition's centerpiece. Through his profound Bangshu calligraphy style—characterized by its majestic vigor and solemn weight—the works vividly embody the profound integration of Chinese civilization with the Silk Road spirit.
Shang Fuping (b. 1955, Jinan, Shandong) is currently a Visiting Professor at the Aesthetic Education Committee of China Oriental Culture Research Association and formerly served as Standing Council Member of the Chinese Calligraphy History Society. Recognized as a pioneering master in contemporary calligraphy, his original "Shang Trinity Style" (seal script, running script, and monumental Bangshu) has been acclaimed by academia as "the new paradigm of 21st-century Oriental calligraphy." His distinguished honors include the Lifetime Achievement Award at both the 10th China Golden Tiger Arts Festival and 11th China Golden Rabbit Arts Festival. His works are permanently collected by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Lesotho in China, the Beijing Museum of Art Collections (BMAC), and other international institutions.
At the event, Mr. Shang Fuping's calligraphic work The Belt and Road, The Road to Happiness vividly embodied the Silk Road spirit of "peaceful cooperation and open inclusiveness" through his masterful brushwork. The Honorary Chairman of the Chinese Calligraphers Association praised the piece, stating: "Within its forceful strokes and silvery hooks lies a universe; this compact composition encompasses vast landscapes, truly exemplifying model calligraphic diplomacy for the new era." The special exhibition area also featured Shang's early masterpieces including Serene Mind and selected verses from The Book of Changes which attracted numerous foreign ambassadors stationed in China to pause and appreciate these works.
Mr. Shang Fuping, honored as a "China-Hong Kong Cultural Ambassador" and recipient of the "Three Masters of Ink - China-Japan-Korea Art Laureate" title, stated: "Calligraphy is a trans-temporal cipher of civilization. We must use brush and ink as bridges to showcase the enduring vitality of Chinese aesthetics to the world." According to reports, his latest work has been designated as a key exhibit for the 2024 China-Russia Year of Cultural Exchange.
